The accompanying XMap openspace transfer files contain grids showing the coverage for the 1:50,000 and 1:250,000 series topographic maps for Canada. Within each grid is a hyperlink that can be used to download the appropriate map sheet for that area in GeoTIFF format from Natural Resources Canada's GeoGratis site (http://geogratis.cgdi.gc.ca/geogratis/en/index.html). These GeoTIFFs can subsequently be viewed in any current version of XMap. To import the Openspace files into XMap, simply drag and drop the files onto the map window and follow the import wizard instructions. After zooming to an area of interest and clicking on the hyperlink in the grid tile, a zipped version of the GeoTIFF will be downloaded using your default Web browser. If necessary, choose a convenient location to save this file and, when the download is complete, unzip the file. To add the GeoTIFF or GeoTIFFs to XMap, select the Map Data Tab, click the Data button and choose Add. In the resulting dialog box, browse to the location where the files were unzipped, select the *.tif file or files and click the Add button. In the Map Data tab, the GeoTIFFs appear under the heading Raster Data from where they can be individually turned on and off. To transfer Canadian topographic maps to the PN-20 or PN-40, click Options in the Handheld Export tab and make sure User Raster Data is selected. Use the Select/Edit button to select the appropriate tiles, name the Map Package and click the Exchange button to transfer it to the device. Notes: - All of the downloaded sheets include a border containing the map legend, scale, and other pertinent information about the sheet. It is therefore not possible to seamlessly display adjacent map sheets in XMap. - Certain 1:50,000 tiles are covered by two separate maps: East and West. In these cases, the hyperlink labels on the map include the words "TWO MAPS" after the sheet name. Clicking these hyperlinks will initiate the download of both maps. - Each hyperlink points to a file stored on the hosting agency's ftp servers. It is therefore likely that if requests for files exceed the server's capacity, the download will fail. If this occurs, try downloading at a later time. - Although the grid covers all of Canada including its adjacent marine areas, many of the tiles do not have a corresponding map. For instance, grid tiles whose coverage is entirely ocean will not have a map. In these cases, an error message will be displayed after clicking the hyperlink. - Please read the relevant copyright and map reproduction policies before using these maps: http://www.nrcan-rncan.gc.ca/com/notiavis-eng.php - Both the accompanying openspace layer and the downloaded GeoTIFF files are compatible with any version of XMap including XMap Professional but WILL NOT WORK WITH DELORME'S TOPO USA software.
